Income Tax Dept Clears 2.22 Lakh Appeals in FY 2025-26, Reduces Pendency by 29%
In the last financial year, 2025-26, the Income Tax Department showed great speed in resolving tax-related matters quickly. According to the information released by the government, the department disposed of a total of 222,540 (approximately 2.22 lakh) appeals during this period. This number is about 29.11% more than the 1,72,361 appeals disposed of in the previous financial year, 2024-25.
In this regard, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Ravi Agrawal wrote a letter to the employees of the department on 9 April 2026, appreciating their work. He said that in the coming financial year 2026-27, the department should work on the basis of data, take balanced action, and make the tax system more transparent and fair.
At the beginning of the year, about 1,51,239 old appeal cases were pending. The department disposed of 50,654 of these cases by conducting a special drive. This led to a 33.49% reduction in pending cases, which shows that the department is also focusing on resolving old disputes.
Complaints and other work
- A total of 72,933 grievances were resolved
- The average time to resolve complaints was 47 days.
- 1,32,125 rectification applications processed
- 5,68,621 Orders Giving Effect (OGE) issued.
New method of investigation
The CBDT chief said that now the department is using data analytics and intelligence-based methods more. Under this approach, a “theme-based” investigation was conducted, which specifically focused on the following issues:
- Claiming a deduction wrongly
- Some businessmen were concealing their income through business receipts.
